Yellow Brick Road
Florian Houlker's slip-cast artworks were devised as a multiple-piece artwork that formed a yellow brick road of ceramic. Imitating chocolate bars, wrapped and unwrapped, each piece pokes at the socio-economic identity of working-class people as he 'paves the way with gold'. In this work, Florian aims to elevate industrial skilled workers to the same status as craftsmen.
Each piece is formed by using the indented section of an Accrington Brick. infamous NORI bricks sourced from the post-industrial landscape of East Lancashire. Known for their incredible strength, they were transported to New York and used to form the foundational layers of the Empire State Building.
An emblem of labour and industry, by re-contextualising the image of the brick as a fragile, refined medium, Florian's work foregrounds tensions between class, value, and durability.
