The delicate and light weight feel of a pair of these Florian’s version of Accrington bricks known as ‘Nori’ are deceptive and uncanny when held.
Florian’s fragile hollow porcelain versions celebrate the overlooked skills and significance of working class labour - elevating them to the status of specialist, hand-applied craftsmanship used in the everyday. 
Florian Houlker’s renditions of the Accrington brick are playful renditions of a well-loved icon of the North. Used to build the foundations of the Empire State Building and considered one of the strongest bricks of its time.

Florian’s Bricks operate within a contemporary art framework that interrogates material, site, and socio-economic identity. Slip-cast in Fine Bone China, the work draws on Accrington NORI bricks sourced from the post-industrial landscape of East Lancashire. By recontextualizing the brick—an emblem of labour and industry—into a fragile, refined medium, the work foregrounds tensions between class, value, and durability. This material shift reflects the erosion of manufacturing heritage and the destabilisation of local identity in post-industrial contexts.
