As a 19-year-old soldier, Jamie Holman’s father had patrolled the Belfast streets. A member of the Provisional IRA shot and wounded him in the stomach on the Falls Road on September 15, 1972. By fusing archival photographs with traces of Blackburn and Belfast, Jamie began devising a series of works that paralleled his own life as a 19-year-old in Blackburn.

This print from the Belfast Shadows series uses laser-etched and burned paper to evoke the fragile, ghostly nature of memory and conflict. The scorched surface suggests both disappearance and survival, as images emerge and dissolve simultaneously.
